“Once upon a time, there was a girl who talked to the moon. And she was mysterious and she was perfect, in that way that girls who talk to moons are."

GUYS, HAVE WE EVER THOUGHT OF THE MARAUDERS HAVING PETS AT HOGWARTS? I MEAN THEY’RE REQUIRED TO BRING EITHER AN OWL, A CAT OR WHATEVER. I’VE NEVER SEEN THEM HAVING ANY PETS.
I always headcanon Peter as having a little Scops owl that, despite being tiny, was this tough little badass. He was this no-nonsense sonofagun, very brave and willing to stand up to any bigger bird—and any human bullies, too. He once defended Peter from another student who cornered Peter and tried to beat him up. His favorite snacks were any sort of big, juicy beetle, which Peter hated touching, but it was worth it when the little guy hooted happily and fluffed up his feathers.
Remus had a scruffy little tawny owl that he named Artemis, and she was very loyal and loving. She was nurturing, too, and Remus would always make sure to see her before and after the full moon because she would worry. She sometimes left him presents like a cat, which he was always grateful for and never let her see him tossing them aside. When she was on his shoulder, she nipped his ears to let him know she was hungry or if she wanted to be scratched. She stayed with him even into his early homeless years, and when she died it killed him. He would never have another owl, ever again.
Sirius would probably not have been allowed a cat or a toad. He needed something “distinguished.” So something like a great grey owl may have suited his mother’s tastes. What Walburga couldn’t expect was the personality of this owl—very laid back, with a sassy sense of humor, but he was a bird whose respect had to be earned. He gave Sirius some difficulty, and they had a rough start. But they did grow close—and the owl was very clever, picking up on how Sirius was treated at home when he had to deliver letters. And when Sirius got a nasty letter, the owl would sort of rip it up with his beak which only made Sirius smile. When Sirius was sent to Azkaban, the owl chose to go back to Hogwarts and become a school owl.
James had a barred owl that was something of a family pet. It was a bit older, but it was like a stoic big brother or uncle to him, and he sometimes went to the owlery to talk to him when he was in trouble. He would turn his head upside down and give James this silly look to try and cheer him up, and would nip at his fingers affectionately when James visited. They loved flying together, and sometimes they would race each other around the quidditch pitch after practice. The owl was around long enough to meet little Harry before finally passing away of old age, just before James was murdered.
Happy birthday, Harry Potter!
To celebrate Harry’s birthday (and my undying love for the series), I made my own covers! I created patterns (Thanks for the inspiration Scandinavia!) using a significant object from each book. I used those in the movies as reference and digitally painted them. You can view the whole project here! :)
(It’s already July 31 here in the Philippines. Haha.)
